Sci-Fi Game Art

Well, I devised a simple way of creating some relatively cool looking little planet images that might be useful as game art. I really liked making them and I made about 20 total. I figured I would put them up here and see if anyone wanted to use them. All of them are relatively small (only 300×300) and they’re all released under a Creative Commons- Attribution license. Following are some thumbnails of a few of the images, this is roughly half of all of them. You can go to my Photobucket album to get them all at full size.

EDIT: As requested, I have made all the source files for the planets available as .xcf’s so anyone with a copy of the GIMP can eliminate the backgrounds and have the planets on a transparent background or they edit what already exists and make something new. Hope people get some use out of them.

Nice planets. I would have liked to be able to use them, but the lighting is off compared to my own. I have also hacked up a great gimp script by Aurore D. that does most of the work for me, all I have to do is provide the base (the spherical texture). You wouldn’t happen to have copies of the spherical textures somewhere? Thanks.

    Hello Justin.

VERY COOL planets set! I was wondering if you would not mind me using them on a new iPhone/iPad app ( space shooter) also how would you want the Attribution to look like? I am more than happy putting your blog address on the about screen on the game. This is my first app (indie iphone dev with NOT one once of graphical talent to speak off:) and I am not yet familiar with the Creative Commons- Attribution license thing.

That is why I would like to ask your permission to use the set. Of course if you see any issues, I will not use the set obviously.

Thank you for sharing such a great graphics!

Just put my name. Justin Nichol and keep me updated as to it’s progress. If you appreciate the gesture of having released these planets, maybe you can release some code or assets you make under permissive licenses eventually. Enjoy.

      Hello Justin.

Thank you so much for getting back to me.

I absolutely appreciate this release. You have a lot of talents. I need to read more about these different type of licenses. If I can release something I will. One thing you can be sure is that won’t be graphics!! I wish i had your talent

Thanks again for your generous offer. I will send you some screen shots as soon as I am further along in the game dev process.

      Keep up the great work.

      Take care.
